Making Outgoing Calls with Google Voice on a Flip Phone

Dialing with Google Voice on a Flip Phone

This method allows you to dial through Google Voice on a flip phone. It's very "Yeshivish" and requires a bit of a workaround. It does take about 20 extra seconds to dial, but it works reliably and gets the job done.

Note: This method has been confirmed to work on the LG Classic. If it works on other phones, please share in the comments!

Dialing Format

Use the following structure when creating the contact:

YourGV#, *YourPIN#, 2, NumberToCall#

Example

  • Google Voice Number: 518-455-2800
  • GV PIN: 745689
  • Number to Dial: 202-456-1111

Final dialed contact number:

5184552800,*745689#,2,2024561111#

Important: The commas (,) insert a 2-second pause. These are crucial and must be included exactly as shown.

Pro Tip: Save this entire sequence as a contact. When you call it, your phone will follow the full Google Voice flow automatically.

Bulk Editing Contacts

To avoid editing each contact manually, follow this process:

  1. Export your phone's contacts as a VCard (.vcf).
  2. Import that VCard file into Google Contacts.
  3. Export from Google Contacts as a Google CSV.
  4. Open the CSV in Google Sheets and bulk-edit the phone number column.
  5. Modify numbers in the format below:
    5184552800p*745689#p2p2024561111#
Note: Replace each comma (,) with a lowercase "p". This is how pauses are encoded in CSV contacts for flip phones.
  6. Download the edited file as a .CSV.
  7. Re-upload the file to Google Contacts. This is mandatory. Skipping this will make your phone ignore the changes.
  8. Download the updated contacts from Google Contacts and transfer them back to your phone.

You're all set! Enjoy using Google Voice on your flip phone.
