24six Gold: No WiFi?

24six had released a new Mp3 that does not use WiFi. It rather sync and refreshes at local stores. I had accused them that it uses WiFi at stores. It turns out I may have been wrong. I saw an ad saying it uses patented proprietary connect technology. Anybody know what that is?

sorry for my bad flip phone camera

Yes go on their website and they explain everything
It’s just like what they have at laser tag where in order to reload you stand in a certain area and automatically registers that the phone is within 50 ft

That was my question

From 24/6 website: Not really revealing the exact technology but my totally shot-in-the-dark guess is that its something running over wifi just setup differently…

Solo Gold is NOT a pre-loaded Mp3 Player. It is the 24Six Solo experience, without Wi-Fi. Have you ever played Laser Tag? When you run out of ammunition, you go “near” the “recharge station” and it fills you up. We built the same concept. Instead of having to plug Solo Gold into a computer to download your favorite songs, create playlists, etc., you can now just go within 20-50 feet of a Solo Connect Station, and it magically connects to the Solo Connect Station. Once connected, you can browse the entire Solo catalog, create playlists, and of course, DOWNLOAD THEM TO USE when you leave the Connect area.

When you are in range of the Solo Connect Station, you can update your library by checking out any of the newest releases, create new playlists, and download them. Also, while you are refreshing, we can sync all the music you listened to while not connected, and pay your favorite artists for every song you listened to.

I’m sure in the hardware of a gold station, it’s really just a WiFi router
And I’m sure in the hardware of the solo gold is a WiFi chip
Just the software probably removed the entire WiFi menu and makes it an only background thing so it can’t be manually accessed

Never thought otherwise

(ABRA CADABRA “It magically connects…” In their words.)

They make it sound like there’s no WiFi chip
They make it seem like they made their own connectivity chip.

Someone check by a store if the see the router on the WiFi list. But they would probably will be smart about it and won’t use a name that u could tell its them. But still go to one store write down the unique names go to another store see if it has any of same names on the list. And then another store to confirm…
anyone bored?

What’s the point though. They obviously use WiFi like that. I don’t understand why they aren’t more transparent about it.

Its prob a hidden network preprogrammed to the phone.
they are not more transparent because wifi is a bad word like qin is a bad word even the f30 eko which is the best filter

such a thing exist?

Yeah of course.

They probably make every single network the same name and password.
They probably removed the WiFi menu from settings and the menu bar and the control center, etc.
They probably programmed the OS to auto connect to any wifi network with the network name and they all have the same password so it can connect. That’s how its all in the background.

And if they want to go a step further, the WiFi may be filtered to prevent any bypasses that are not 24six download related (although Im sure the hosts file is whitelisted already)

I feel like we are really thinking very conventionally. Is there really no other wireless technology they can be using? Not that I have any specific idea, just trying to think out of the box.

…realistically.

Of course, technically its possible to use other wireless technologies.

But why would they go out of their way to build something like that, which would probably very complicated, if they can use WiFi and call it laser tag?

Maybe they know that people out there will know it is Wi-Fi and therefore making fool out of themselves, so maybe they actually are saying the truth.

Who cares?

Not really.
If they call it a “Laser Tag Connect That Just Magically Happens Without Any Connectivity”, and some tech geeks come along and say “Nu uh, its really WiFi”, they really don’t care, and they don’t either look stupid.
Especially since this device is targeted at people who are clueless enough to think that this device is more kosher because “it doesn’t have WiFi”, even though it has the exact same capabilities.

Could be, but I highly doubt it.

Using anything other than WiFi would probably be a lot of work, very complicated, and expensive to develop.

Using WiFi is very simple.

Anything else they’d be building on an entirely different network protocol, have to build a lot from scratch, etc.

I agree what your saying may be true. I was just saying another side.
