AWS outage disrupts half the internet!

An issue with Amazon’s cloud computing platform, Amazon Web Services, disrupted thousands of websites and apps, including dozens of major websites & online services.

A DNS-related issue affecting affecting its DynamoDB API endpoint, affecting AWS’s US-EAST-1 region in their Northern Virginia data center, was the cause of the problem.

Major services affected included:

  • Amazon.com (including Amazon mobile app, shopping cart, Amazon Music, Prime Video)
  • Alexa voice assistant
  • Ring smart home devices
  • Snapchat
  • Roblox
  • Fortnite
  • Wordle
  • Signal
  • Canva design platform
  • Duolingo
  • Coinbase
  • Venmo
  • Robinhood
  • Chime
  • Lyft
  • HBO Max
  • Disney+
  • Hulu
  • Roku
  • IMDb
  • United Airlines
  • McDonald’s app
  • Reddit
  • Character.AI
  • AT&T
  • MyFitnessPal
  • Steam
  • PlayStation Network
  • Zoom
  • Strava
  • Airtable
  • CollegeBoard
  • Verizon
  • Perplexity AI
  • HM Revenue & Customs (UK government service)
  • Lloyds and Halifax UK banking platforms

The outage impacted a wide variety of sectors including e-commerce, social media, gaming, finance, streaming media, government services, and smart home devices globally, due to the central role of AWS’s US-EAST-1 region infrastructure.

The problem has been resolved by now, and most services are back online.

LOL, I am by work and one of out major portals rely on AWS. Its really slow and I got a whole pop up about the outage

I was trying to log into my Amazon account a few hours ago, but couldn’t, because it wouldn’t send me an OTP.

I just got the OTP, a few hours late.

Still major issues, non stop phone calls, tickets and emails.

As an IT I can say that today was the Mondayest Monday of the year!

Its the first normal Monday in 4 weeks, of course such stuff will happen…

Chase customer service is still down (they can’t access accounts)

There was also a internet outage in October 2021 affecting nearly all social media sites including WhatsApp, and just like today it was also the first Monday after Yom tov, I think its connected somehow…

I was actually in top golf and their whole system was glitching because of it
