Google Voice App Discussion and Comments

Discussion for Google Voice Texting App - Software & tools / made by members - JTech Forums

Sounds like a great app but atleast for me it doesn’t work on the phones I tested

LG Exalt: Only 1 message loaded, nothing else works

Sonim XP5800: No messages loaded

Sonim XP3plus 5G: App just crashes if you log in

Thanks for trying it out - I’ll try and look into it. Curious if on the exalt it worked to click options –> Load history

Either way it should’ve loaded more than 1 message so something for sure not working right.

The button does work but nothing happened

Hi @Shua welcome to the forums!

Can you add to your post what the benefit is of this app over the regular Google Voice App

How can someone install this but not Google Voice, what is the use case for this app?

One works on phones without a touchscreen, the other doesn’t

As @Air_Condition150 mentioned Google Voice app is hard to manage with dpad only phone. This app was constructed with dpad phones in mind.

For me the main reason I built this app was because the regular Google Voice app doesn’t work at all on my phone (kyocer e4610). Google play issues stops the app from working, and even using a web app of the google voice website doesn’t work due to an outdated webview on my phone.

Thanks @Shua for clarifying this, I added this note to your Post

@Shua Welcome to the forum!!
Wow its a wonderful app
What about MMS?

@Shua how long does it take to sync? I sent a message to my google voice and I see it in my emails but not in the app

@Moshe - As of now MMS should just show up as a received text saying something like MMS Received - maybe one day i’ll update it to actually download the pic/vid/contact and show it straight in the app.

The app is programmed to sync every 5 minutes so you should see a new text at about 5 minutes. If you leave the app open it’s supposed to sync every minute so the text would come into the app faster. I did notice that often right after installation the background sync (the every 5 minute one) doesn’t start running for 10 15 minutes. Not sure why.

Curious what type of phone you installed it on, and if you’re message ever popped into the app?

E4610
Yeah at the end it popped in but took some time
More then one and a half hour

Is the app open source?

(It doesn’t have to be. Just curious if it is no pressure)

@Air_Condition150 I got my hands on an LG Exalt - the same thing happened to me that only one message loaded. However when i checked back a few hours later I saw that the rest of them loaded and the app seemed to be functioning properly. Not sure why it took so long. I’m thinking the Exalt may just be slower possibly times out on the imap stuff.

@flipphoneguy yes - i’ll keep u posted when i upload the project

New release

It says I should use my Gmail app password. Where do I find this?

You need 2‑Step Verification to be on to be able to have an app password.

  • Go to https://myaccount.google.com/
  • On the left, select Security
  • Under “How you sign in to Google”, make sure 2‑Step Verification is turned ON
  • If it’s off, turn it on first — otherwise the App Password option won’t appear.
  • After 2SV is enabled, scroll back to the same section
  • You’ll now see App passwords
  • Open it → choose the app (e.g., “Mail”) and device → Google generates a 16‑character password

Then go to https://myaccount.google.com/apppasswords
