How about everyone having a personal setting to choose if it shows if they’re online?

So if there are 10 people online, and only 4 of them set themselves to be visible, it will show “Reven, Shimon Levi, Yehuda, and 6 others are online”.

Those ppl will be able to hide their profile

I’m all for seeing who’s online, it makes it a bit more “social”,

(a while back I tried “exploiting” the dumcourse plugin to get who’s online then fetch there avatars and display it for myself, but there was no exposed api from the plugin.. (whatever, it was a silly idea!))
