I am writing to share a brief article regarding the latest TCL flip phone series and the strategic use of KaiOS for 5G connectivity.

Why the TCL Flip 4 Use KaiOS for 5G

The TCL Flip Flip 4, are part of a rare category of devices: 5G-enabled flip phones. While 5G offers incredible speeds, it is also known for high battery consumption. This creates a significant engineering challenge for the flip phone form factor, where internal space for a large battery is extremely limited. This is exactly why you don’t see many 5G flip phones on the market today; it is very difficult to build a stable 5G device that maintains enough battery life for daily tasks like messaging.

To solve this, TCL utilizes KaiOS. Because KaiOS is designed for ultra-low battery consumption, it balances out the high power demands of the 5G . By running a lightweight operating system, these phones can provide the benefits of 5G connectivity without sacrificing the long-lasting battery life that flip phone users expect.

There is no TCL Flip “5” yet, and only the TCL Flip 4 is 5G.

I’m pretty sure it doesn’t make that much of a difference on the battery, 3G uses more battery then 4G, tested it myself

What can I even use the speeds for?

Kaios is garbage, there is no benefit of having it, its always been slow and laggy, and a app store with tons of slop

Yea I agree on that, I think the reason it has 5G is to make sure its gonna work for a long time once 4G is gone

Facts.

On phones running the same OS/ROM, with the same size battery?

I can’t imagine that KaiOs is more efficient than Android.

The first stable, responsive version of KaiOs, KaiOs 4, needs 4 GB of RAM.

Android 11, if the ROM is done right, runs beautifully on 2 GB.

I’m not sure why TCL uses KaiOs for most of their dumbphones, but it has nothing to do with 5G.

They used KaiOs for every one of their dumbphones, besides for the Flip 2.

The only one that is 5G is the Flip 4.

My guess is that they use KaiOs to save on costs of building and maintaining dpad compatible apps.

3G used more battery in your test probably because the phone couldn’t connect to the network because there wasn’t any network available, so it was searching. There is no arguing with the facts; the 3G phones from yesteryear could last a week. You can barely find a 4G phone that can make it more than a day and a few hours. And the phones had tiny batteries. Granted, they also have smaller non-touch displays, etc. But a huge battery drain is the 4G antenna and also the battery-hogging non-optimized Android.

I don’t know the facts so I’m not gonna say but one man tests means nothing. The amount of factors that can make a difference…

The question is which technology fundamentally consumes more energy. I’m sure that’s easy to Google at AI… (Please don’t start pasting here blocks of AI slop :rofl:)

For example btw - I made a plugin and ran like 250 tests against it but there was one glitch in it which I didn’t realize to test which gave Kosherboy a 500 error when he tried to login

manufactures like verizon att and tmobile don’t like when their phones are rooted customized so they switched to chaos because its harder to modify and its cheaper

Verizon, At&t, and T-Mobile don’t make the phones.

How is KaiOs harder to modify than Android.

How is it cheaper?

Where do you take that?? The TCL Flip 4 5G only has 2GB RAM. And a lot of Kaios phones only have 512MB (RAM)

The TCL Flip 2 only has 1 GB ram and it was decent, definitely not slower than Kaios

I am actually working with a manufacturer to switch the flip 4 to Android anyone thinks the flip 2 ROM would work for it?

My bad.

But still, that’s 2 GB of RAM for the first version of KaiOs that isn’t laggy.

And Android 8.1 Go, which can run most apps, can officially run on 512 MB RAM.

And I can run without any RAM at all.

How is all that relevant?

KaiOs phones running on 512 MB of RAM, and having a response time of about 3-5 business days doesn’t mean they’re less demanding than Android.

So then it’s ROM wasn’t done right.

Or you’re expecting modern bloatware to run as well on the Qualcomm QM215 and with 2 GB of RAM as on a modern smartphone.

Either way, that doesn’t change the fact that Android 11 can run great on 2 GB of RAM.
