They all work well, and each have their pros and cons.

Some are completely d-pad compatible, some are mostly d-pad compatible but need a mouse for some actions.

How about you try them yourself?

Iā€™ve tried installing the E4810ā€™s, LGā€™s, Schok, and more on other phones and it never worked, it crashes instantly when you try to go in

And unfortunately Sunbeamā€™s and QKSMS have too much problems to use it long term

Images are hard to view. On the sunbeam one it crashes when you try to create a new conversation, sending a picture is unreasonably hard if you do it thru the app. Scrolling can become weird. While most of the settings are d-pad friendly, there are times where it gets hard without a touch screen

Maskim their all not good for people who want their messages working smoothly. We need someone to make The Message+ app from either the Exalt , DuraXV or the Cadence work with the E4831. (The E4831 is missing Verizonā€™s SoftKeyActivity framework, and after that who knows what else.)

While Iā€™m not sure, I donā€™t think the E4831 works on verizon. So there was no reason for that to be in there I guess

Hello chiming in a bit as a Kyocera 902 user.
I found an old version of SMSDroid, however its new message to someone you dont already have on the list is a bit hard to navigate with dpad only, but the rest of the app is snappy.

I tried the ones linked here:

  • Sunbeam.
    • REALLY good, but problematic when trying to send a message to someone you dont have a conversation with already, crashes on that action.
  • Modded QKSMS
    • Well navigable, the options and compose buttons are a bit hard to see when selected sometimes. Searching through contacts is a very laggy.
  • Modded Fossify
    • seems snappy, but I did not find how to send a new text to a new contact. The floating button is no more but there should be some other way to do it.
    • Also the top of the app is cut off by the android top bar. I can see that there is supposed to be search bar there and i can get to the settings.

I feel like out of all of these the QKSMS or the SMSDroid are the best choices, neither is great but both allow to send messages to new contacts with a hassle. SMS Droid is snappier outside while just using the app.

Right now I use Quik, but it has the same problem as the rest of them for starting a new conversation, it uses a floating button.

@fliper is in middle of working on a d-pad compatible messaging app, based off of Quik.

So far nothing major, but he just started.

Thank you for the hard work, creating a new conversation does NOT crash the app anymore. Iā€™ll try using the app on a daily basis now and report anything other bugs I find.

I am wondering about two, minor things tho.

The first is about the app icon, it is noticibly smaller compared to other apps on my phone. I can help fixing the icon if you can provide me with its image. Iā€™m attaching an image of how it looks so you can understand.

Secondly, Iā€™m wondering about the MENU/BACK buttons and other buttons that take their place on different menus, would it somehow be possible to bind them to kyoceras mail/browser buttons? Thatā€™s how the native apps do it and it would make the experience of using the app just a tad bit smoother.

Just tested this on the Sonim XP3plus 5G, finally doesnā€™t crash when making a new conversation, and the side buttons actually do something, excellent. Main issue I still have is selecting images/videos. Maybe you can make it that it should redirect you to the stock gallery app instead of trying to select the image/video in the messaging app itself. And in the message and conversation list, whatever message your by, it becomes entirely blue and you canā€™t see anything. If you can fix these two issues, then this messaging app is the best replacement for any feature phone

Its very good for using with D-Pad, but everything is too big, scrolling in a messaging conversation is messed up too, especially if there are pictures

Could you change the package name, so that the original Quik doesnā€™t have to be uninstalled to install yours?
