T-Mobile 4G Shutdown

T-Mobile is stopping to work with 4g, This is just on T-Mobile directly, not MVNO’s yet. They’re slowly shutting down, a lot of people already have the service stopped.

There is an existing thread for this already

Good point. Just wanted to add that they actually already started turning off service for many people

And that this affects all Qin phones and all 4g flip phones

Really? I thought this was just about not signing up new customers on 4G devices? They are actually dropping people?

In the last week had a bunch of customers that got disconnected. Spoke to T-Mobile today and they said they’re already starting…

That’s horrid. They could at least give people some notice.

When will their network stop supporting 5G?

According to Perplexity, starting in 2026 new customers won’t be able to get 4G.
4G will be phased out slowly, with most 4G bands gone by 2028.

They didn’t start yet their 4G shutdown yet. Only new T-Mobile activations in 2026 must be on a 5G SA phone and T-Mobiles 4G LTE is planned to completely shut down on or about 2035. Phones with 4G only will still work until its completely shut down (as of now 2035). Also T-Mobile haven’t made a official announcement about this yet

Just today, I tried switching my friend from a smartphone to a kosher phone, and he was only getting 2g signal (his smartphone had 5g). Is this at all related?

edit: he has tmobile and I simply transferred the sim

No… Kosher phones have 2.4G many times (I think) and not 5 G

He’s talking about cell phone service, not WiFi.

That’s not what I mean.

I put his sim in a 4g phone but he only got 2g signal from tmobile. First time I ever saw that.

Yeah thought so too. Called T-Mobile to figure it out, and was told that they started shutting down lines

Bummer! I hope ATT and Verizon are not planning on following along any time soon.

I really don’t like the direction the phone market is going. Nowadays, 1 year is considered a long time to stay on one phone, so it’s no big deal for carriers, software, and manufacturers to stop supporting old hardware whenever they feel like it.

Even T-Mobile is gonna regret doing it so early, trust me. They keep falling back to 4G LTE a lot and this will make people leave T-Mobile. 5G is still very far away from being as reliable as 4G and it will likely be like that for another few (3-4) years

  1. There’s a reason they’re doing it slowly.
  2. They’re literally phasing out 4G so they can use more bands for 5G.

It seems like Verizon is playing this the safe way, On Verizon 5g is still only for data , calls still always route through 4glte.

Hence it’s impossible for Verizon to shut down 4g anytime soon if it’s still i used for calls even when 5g is available.

They shouldn’t be fixing something unless it’s broken….

Most people would rather have strong and reliable 4g signals, than unreliable 5g everywhere, 5G should just be meant to enhance data speeds.

Why should the Nature of 5g need to be SA (Standalone),

( for example with Verizon’s non-standalone 5g speeds still get up to 500mbps and even faster on mmwave)
