Rooting Sonim Phones

Does anyone have any idea how I can root the Sonim Xp3900?

Its a qualcomm device so its a little more tricky

I don’t have any experience rooting, so that doesn’t help me much.
Google doesn’t have anything to say about rooting the xp3900.

…anyone?
I had no problem getting to fastboot, but the bootloader is locked.
Tried fastboot flashing unlock and fastboot OEM unlock.
Didn’t work.

What r u trying to do?

Did u unlock the bootloader in developer options?

You can’t unlock bootloder just from developers options

He means allowing oem unlocking in developer options.

And yes, I did.

Is there any way to root a sonic?

I think it should be possible for xp3800, its firmware is out there, still looking for a way to root the xp3900.

im searching for a while but cant find anything about unlocking bootloader in order to root the sonim xp5800 or sonim xp3800. Does anyone know anything about it? (Any help is appriciated including if anyone knows why it doesnt work so i know where to make research.) Thanks!!

Not sure why you are trying to unlock the bootloader its a qualcom device you need the correct firehose

You’re mixing up two different things.
For EDL, Qualcomm’s version of brom, you need a firehose.
But if you can unlock the bootloader, you can flash using fastboot, and you don’t need any firehose for that.

It won’t work because Sonim locked it and won’t let you unlock it.

There isn’t anything you can do about that.

The only possible ways to root would be:

  • What Purifone does, somehow hack Sonims update software, which is designed to only allow flashing stock ROMs, to flash a modified ROM.
  • Reverse engineering and spoofing an OTA update
  • Use a root exploit that uses a vulnerability in Android, or in the Linux kernel.

There are probably exploits that have already been discovered, and probably have been used to root, but these often need tweaking to work for every device, and no one has done that for any flip phone yet.

Feel free to try doing one of these yourself.

You just might brick a few devices before you’re successfull.

There are stock ROMs for the Xp3800 and the Xp5800 on XDA, with
instructions for flashing, but only for certain versions of the Xp3800 and Xp5800.
